History of Alberton
Alberton was established on the farm Elandsfontein in 1904. A syndicate of property developers, chaired by the town's namesake General Hendrik Alberts, laid out the town on a portion of the farm.
Geography of Alberton
Alberton is located about 12km southeast of Johannesburg and offers easy access to most major freeways, such as the N12 that runs around the city of Johannesburg, the N17 that runs due east and of course the N3 Durban highway.
Meyersdal View Nature Estate
The estate is situated in the heart of Meyersdal, in Alberton, and was established around 2003. The estate consists of 69 exclusive upmarket homes which are only accessed via a security controlled guardhouse, which is manned by a private security company on a 24hour 7day basis. The estate boasts amazing well established gardens with outdoor gym equipment and play parks for children.
Arts and Culture
In the nearby township of Thokoza, visitors can see the Thokoza Memorial Wall in Khumalo Street, which honours the victims of political conflict, while important late Iron Age settlements have been discovered in the Meyersdal Koppie Nature Reserve.
Science and Nature
There are plenty of quality government schools as well as some private schools in the immediate area. There Rietvlei Zoo and Nature Reserve is a fun-filled, yet educational day-out for the entire family and there are braai and recreational facilities at the Meyersdal Nature Reserve as well as the nearby Jackson Dam Municipal park.
Entertainment
Alberton City, The Glen, Mall of the South are to name a few of the Shopping Centres which provide all the standard outlets and kids entertainment, while fun-filled pubs and restaurants are on offer in and around town.
Sport
There are two excellent golf courses, the first being the Glenvista Country Club and then Albertons own 18-hole course at Reading Country Club, which is regarded as one of the best in the area and its popularity pays testimony to this. Alberton also offers a range of sporting facilities, such as public swimming pools, rugby and cricket clubs, baseball and skateboarding parks and of course a couple of golf driving ranges.
